Cloud infrastructure has been the standard for a decade, yet it still attracts the same tired arguments. Some of them were fair 15 years ago. Today, most of them are just excuses to avoid making a decision.
Here is the reality behind the myths we still hear.
Myth 1: The cloud isn’t secure
The Claim: Data is safer on a physical box you can point at in your own office.
The Reality: Major providers invest in encryption, identity management, logging, and independent audits at a scale most organisations will never match. When breaches happen, they usually start with an open storage bucket, a shared password, or an account nobody offboarded, not a mystical leak in “the cloud.” Implementation matters. So does strict access control.
Myth 2: The cloud is too expensive
The Claim: Migration is a blank cheque that will ruin the IT budget.
The Reality: You can absolutely waste money in Azure or AWS. You can also stop buying hardware, power, and a refresh cycle for capacity you barely use. Pay-as-you-go is only cheaper if someone is monitoring the bill and switching off what you don’t need. Cost is a design problem, not a morality play.
Myth 3: Cloud is only for large enterprises
The Claim: SMBs cannot afford it and won’t see the benefit.
The Reality: The entire point of the cloud model is that smaller organisations can access a slice of the exact same enterprise platforms. You do not need a data centre to get robust email, identity management, secure backups, or a system that isn’t tethered to a single office location.
Myth 4: Migrating is too complicated
The Claim: Cutover will take the business offline and the project will never quite finish.
The Reality: Unplanned migrations are a mess. Planned ones are a controlled project involving inventory, sequencing, identity, data mapping, a clear rollback plan, and someone held accountable. Phases beat hero weekends. A partner who has actually done this on Azure and AWS won’t pretend it’s magic.
Myth 5: Cloud isn’t reliable
The Claim: Cloud outages prove the office server was a wiser choice.
The Reality: Azure and AWS publish uptime figures that a server in a designated office cupboard cannot match, designed with redundant hardware you will never see. However, you can still architect a brittle system in the cloud. Multi-region redundancy and failover are choices. So is having a backup you have actually tested and restored.
Myth 6: You lose control of your data
The Claim: Moving to the cloud means handing the keys over to a stranger.
The Reality: You own the data; the provider simply hosts it. Access control, audit trails, encryption, and geographic location (including Australian-only regions) are yours to dictate or yours to get wrong. Data sovereignty is a strict configuration and contract reality, not an abstract fear.
Myth 7: Cloud is just storage
The Claim: It’s basically just a hard drive in someone else’s building.
The Reality: Storage is the most boring slice of the cloud. Compute, identity management, application platforms, and advanced analytics are where the value lies. Use the parts that solve an actual operational problem you have. Ignore the rest until you need them.
